Motor Vehicle Crashes

As the New York Department of Health puts it, car crashes are not really “accidents” at all, but are instead predictable and preventable events. In many cases, crashes occur as a result of another driver’s negligence. Motor vehicle crashes occur on average once every two minutes in New York City, amounting to over a quarter million crashes per year. Car accidents are the fourth leading cause of injury-related death in Nassau County and the second-leading cause of hospitalizations and ER visits in the county.

An experienced auto accident attorney can help you get medical care and compensation after a crash. In Nassau County, Long Island and New York City, call Giuffré Law Offices for immediate assistance.

Rear-end collisions

Rear-end crashes are a major form of distracted driving car accidents in New York. When you are in stop-and-go traffic on the highway or city streets, turning your attention from the road for just a few seconds is enough to crash into the car in front of you. Even when traffic is running smoothly, you never know when a sudden slowdown, an object in the road, or some other emergency might make the car in front of you slow or stop.

Rear-end collisions are not always just “fender-benders” with minor property damage. Modern vehicles are equipped to absorb the shock of impact with little to no exterior damage, but the human body is not. Rear-end crash victims can suffer whiplash from the rapid acceleration-deceleration forces, along with muscle tears and strains, as well as herniated and fractured spinal vertebrae. A rear-end collision can even cause a traumatic brain injury when the brain impacts the inside of the skull and connecting tissues stretch or shear away.

Head-on collisions

Front-end crashes can cause severe injuries to occupants in both vehicles and often involve traumatic brain injuries and in many cases fatalities. Head-on collisions happen when aggressive or reckless drivers cross into oncoming traffic when trying an unsafe passing maneuver. Distracted drivers might drift over the yellow line for just a second while looking away or reaching for their phones. Drunk drivers might overreact to a traffic slowdown or objects in the road and swerve into an oncoming lane. Drowsy drivers can fall asleep at the wheel and cross traffic, as well.

T-bone crashes

T-bone crashes, also known as side-impact or broadside collisions, occur when the front of one car or truck crashes into the side of a another vehicle. T-bone collisions most often occur at an intersection when one driver fails to stop at a stop sign or traffic light, or otherwise fails to yield the right-of-way to the other driver. The most lethal broadside collision occurs when a pickup truck or SUV hits a smaller car, striking the vehicle in the window area where there is very little in the way of steel reinforcement to protect the occupant or absorb the shock of the impact. T-bone crashes are often deadly for the occupants in the car that gets hit. About 25% of traffic deaths involve T-bones, placing them among the most lethal type of crash. Side-impact airbags can help, but while frontal airbags have been standard in all new vehicles since 1998, side-curtain airbags continue to be optional in many models to this day.

Rollover car accidents

A rollover car accident can happen in a crash when a car gets knocked over, or when a driver jerks the wheel too sharply or encounters an obstacle in the road. Rollovers are most likely to occur in vehicles with a high center of gravity and a narrow wheelbase, such as many models of SUV. Rollovers are especially deadly accidents, particularly when an unreinforced roof crushes during the rollover.

Single-vehicle accidents

Drivers can be hurt in car accidents even when another driver doesn’t crash into them. These so-called phantom vehicle accidents can happen when another car swerves into the accident victim’s lane or slams on their brakes in front of them, forcing the accident victim out of their lane or off the road entirely. Single-vehicle accident victims are exposed to severe injury or death if they strike a fixed object like a pole or tree or leave the highway in an elevated area. It can be particularly challenging to prove that these accidents were the fault of a negligent driver. An experienced auto accident attorney knows how to investigate the crash and prove another driver was at fault and may be able to track down the driver responsible. If not, accident victims might be able to access compensation from their uninsured motorist coverage, the same as if they were involved in a hit-and-run car accident.
